1955 Olds 98 brakes

Anyone out there know how and or has pictures on how to disassemble the master cylinder. It looks like it takes a spanner wrench but I am not sure and this is not my unit so I do not want to hurt it.

I can't help much as I do not have a shop manual and have never done one. I will assume you have power brakes on a 98. There were two types used - Bendix and Moraine - so a starting point may be to determine which type you have. Bendix was aluminum and Moraine cast iron master, plus at least the Bendix had the name cast into it. Do you already have a rebuild kit? In the Fusick catalog they sell rebuilt units but say kits are not available. So if you tear into it without a kit you may get into a bind for parts. If you have manual, both kits and units are available. Someone with a shop manual and more knowledge can give you better help. Good luck

Fusick shows both rebuild units in there latest catalog, mine doesn't say that they are available or not you might give them a call for availability.

I have the 55 olds shop manual and as I looked over the schematic there are more parts in that booster than Carter has pills( I'm I dating myself)and yes it lists several special tools one of which is a special spanner tool #j-5794 also Truarc #1 pliers J-5403, doesn't show a picture of the tools so I'm at a loss whether something common could be substituted. This rebuild may not be as complicated as it looks once you get into it but just at first glance there are a bunch of does and do- nots and I wouldn't think about it without a detailed manual. This does not look like a job for a novice ...Tedd

It does require a type of spanner wrench. On mine I made one easily; I just took a square bar of steel I have (about 1" wide and 1/2" deep, sure almost anything will do) and drilled two holes in it, the exact spacing and size of the holes in the master cylinder. I slipped a pair of drill bits in the holes I drilled that where a close match, and tada, I had a spanner.

So picture it this way, a bar with two drill bits sticking out of it to insert into the master cylinder. I of course used the round end of the bit and not the cutting end. Very low tech but it got mine assembled and reassembled.

I was not so thoughtful or savvy when I did mine to take pics, it was about 8 months ago. If I remember right it comes apart pretty simple once you remove that nut. I have the service manual with the procedure which is what I used as a guideline if you need any pages let me know.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it was... Mine had a decent amount of corrosion locking it in so keep in mind you're working against that... It pops right loose and shouldn't fight any more after that. I had a pretty long bar to work with as well

I bought a kit ($99.00) for moraine master cyl.(power) and didn't have a problem. I just took my time taking everything apart and laid it out as I took it apart. Cleaned and replaced parts and re-assy. Be sure to check the push rod in the maste cyl. for pits. The kit didn't have one, but it can be ordered. Good luck!!
