6 volt ignition question
6 volt ignition question
Hello, the car is a 1948 oldsmobile 66, inline six engine. When the car is running i do not measure any voltage on the + terminal of the ignition coil. I measure voltage at the distributor housing instead, is this normal?
The car starts hard when it is hot.
Does anybody know how to test the fuelpump? I notice there is very little fuel in the filter when the car is running, is there a way to measure the amount of fuel that it put out?
The fuelpump has a rebuild kit installed.

I'm asking this because I don't know on a 48 ,does it have a positive ground or negative?
If you un screw the fuel line at the carb affix a hose to it and put a coke bottle on the hose, remove coil wire so car won't start, then crank for 15 seconds, bottle should have about 3 + - inches of gas in it if pump is working correctly. Most fuel filters will have a large bubble of air in them even when the pump is good....Tedd

Also make sure your cables are large, like 00 size. 6 volt systems have never spun engines over quickly even when new, but for years their engines have been starting and pushing that old Iron down the road. Remember, the backup for a 6 volt system use to be a crank! No speed there.... Tedd
Hello, the positive cable goes to the startermotor relay. The negative goes to a cut off switch and then to bodyground.
The car has a new optima battery now and it cranks good, after one hour of driving the car sits for a few hours, and then it takes a very long time to start again.
Cold starts are always good, it starts the second or third time.
