1956 super 88 brakes

I am going through my power brakes, need help and advice on where to get a vacuum canister and check valve, my search has come up empty, I have found a “generic” canister at summit racing, will that work, also there are many check valves out there, will any of those work? Any help and advice would be appreciated.

Fusick just sold the vacuum canister that you're looking for. We'll keep an eye out for another one.

I don't know if 1954 would have been the same but I've got the complete setup listed in the following thread. I'd consider the parts rebuildable cores. Since nobody has spoken up about the complete setup I might consider breaking it up and selling just the parts you need, if they were the same. John

The canister for the '56 is listed in Group 4.902 as part number 567889. The part number for the '54 and '55 is 565585. Makes no difference if it's Bendix or Moraine.

In the Fusick ad for the '56 canister that recently sold, they say it is 12 inches long and 7 3/4 inches wide.

Now all you need is the measurements for the the one that John has to figure out if it will work.

54 and 55 are different shape than 56. The 54 and the 55 live under the left frame rail 56 is up front right under the hood. but I would bet that the check valve would work . If originality isn't important I know someone who made one for a 55 out of 4 inch PVC pipe. .... Tedd

brake repair

The big question would be are you looking for oem or you want it to stop . .i installed a new pedal & bracket a modern day 2 chamber gm brake cyl. And a 7 inch booster to my 56 rocket & it works great . Its a lot more relieble & it was alot cheaper than a rebuild of the old treadal-vac.

I am interested in what parts you used and what was involved in the swap. Thank you

If you are interested in non original modern type master and booster most I've seen mount on a new thicker bracket at the front of the drivers side firewall. You lose your defroster when this happens also a new linkage need to be made but that is not a major problem. On the plus side you can now install a disk brake conversion should you want to. On the negative side You may never do well in a show other than a local show and shine becauses of your modifications, this may not matter to you just somethng to contemplate..... I like originals but I am in the manoriety anymore. Your car your money....... Tedd

I would love to keep this car all original as the car is complete. But i plan on putting a lot of miles on this car and want the added confidence that power disk brakes provide. I plan on driving the entire rt66 in this car. When i picked it up we drove about 3 hours on rt66 with it on the trailer and next she will be under her own power.

I often put 3000, 4000 miles plus on my ride with no issues. If it is rebuilt correctly no reason it won't go the life of the car just like it is. You just have to trust your work and keep it up like any other car..... Tedd
