Vintage cooler for the 50

A few weeks ago abuddy of mine gave me a cooler that had been hanging on his garage wall for years. He said the Olds deserved it. it is in pretty good shape.

Got my brother to paint it to match the roof. Then my buddy DRay out of Santa Fe did some of his striping. It also works pretty good filled with crushed ice.

Gets it's share of compliments, and WTF is that looks. By the way I still hadn't installed the brace on the bottom in pictures. I coated it with plastidip, and it was still drying.

Those things are so cool. We used to see them all over the road when I was a kid. Now they are all in junk yards collecting rust (except for two).

Just curious could this cooler be adapted to convertible, is it affixed permanently to the top or does it just clamp to the window? This could fix a problem I have with my wife who won't go for a ride if it's very hot outside and still keep the car original and add a little cool factor....Tedd

Those were before my time. Are they essentially small evap. coolers?

I'm sure if they will work on a convertible. The top of bracket, where the inner rod ends tucks into the window groove. The convertible top also has that same groove. The bottom of bracket just slips in between window and body felt. It has three clips that clip onto window.

When not in use just pop it right off. I don't always have mine on in the evening drives.

Just curious how good does it work? Will it knock the temp down a few degrees(4 or 5 degrees) or is it mostly psychological with a littlr water splashing from the unit......Tedd

I works surprisingly well (especially if you keep filling it with crushed ice). It works especially well here in New Mexico because of the dry heat. Of course once you slow down or stop, nothing! Should work real good in California also. Also if the passenger liked he can pull the cord and release fast, instant cold shower. My GF found this out LOL.
