Trying to save a 1956 Olds 98
I am looking to save a nice looking 1956 Olds 98 from going to the crusher,at a junkyard and the owner said he was going to put it in the crusher.Still has the original 324 V8 and the transmission is gone, someone removed it already.I offered a grand and he said no.I upped it today to $2,000.00 and he said maybe.I found two rust spots on the body so far,one on the driver's side door and the right quarter panel. The owner is going to give me a call tonight and I said I would pay up to $2,500.00 for it.I have a 1956 Super 88 and would love to have a 98.This 98 is a 2 door Holiday and most of the trim is there. How much should I pay for it?I am still dreaming about it.

While I whole-heartedly applaud your efforts to save this car, I think the owner is playing you...if they were really going to crush it he'd see a few hundred bucks in the scrap value - and they're refusing your offer of $2000?
Hard to estimate the value, but a 'scrapyard' car, unless it's a convertible - with no engine, probably at most a $2500 car - just my opinion.
I truly hope you can save it

He was not playing, wanted to crush it and I saved it.Called me and said $2,000 is a fair pair price,I bought it.I have to find a windshield for it too,a huge crack in the middle.Plans are go through the engine and a couple of my buddies tried to talk me into dropping in a small block chevy.I said no way, want to keep it oldsmobile drivetrain.I have an uncle that has the transmission for it,he won't get rid of it since he has no use for it.Transmission came out of a destroyed 1956 Olds 88.It will be a winter project

Where are you located? I know where a Jetaway is located in Northern Ca.I also have a new windshield for a 55 convertible that I would sell if #1 it would fit your car #2 if It could be picked up, I'm not into shipping something that fragile. The windshield has a tiny bubble on the lower left side that unless I showed it to you you would not catch it.....Tedd

I did find a windshield already,a co worker mine's friend has one in good shape stored in a wooden storage box he made for it.Found a driver's side door too that is rust free.I know the 98 is 6 to 8 inches longer than the 88 and super 88.Been doing my research before I bought the 98.I plan on hopping up the 324 performance wise.

Parts are coming in more.My Uncle Heath gave me the transmission, finally said it was time to get rid of it giving it to me knowing had no use for it.Ready to go in,rebuilt after it was pulled.Bought the door for $100.00 and the windshield for $100.00 also.I have a right quarter panel on order through a body shop.I call it "lucky" knowing I saved it from the crusher.

You may want to reseal the trans if it has been sitting a long time. Seals can dry out then leak later. I would hate for you to install then have to take out later. Need to see some pics and good luck!

The quarter panel ordered is the whole piece, the owner of the body shop is a huge 1950s to 1960 Oldsmobile fanatic. The transmission was rebuilt a couple weeks ago,the fluid was black and did stink when my Uncle Henry pulled the pan when he parted out the destroyed 1956 Oldsmobile 88 which was a roll over.I have everything figured out, staying with the Red and White color with Cream tuck and roll interior.
