starter for 55 needed
starter for 55 needed
Hi friends. I am attempting to start my '55 OLDS 324cid after sitting for 20years(resto project I sadly need to sell) Everything looks good however my factory original starter is a "brick". Does anyone know of anywhere I can find a starter-ANY KIND-to use simply to make this thing crank over. I will keep the original to go with the car but rebuilding it at the moment is not financially an option. HELP PLEASE............you folks are the greatest, thanks.

Had it checked by a specialist. armature shorted, and the internals are basically disintegrating. This is odd because the car has been covered and stored. Simply looks like moisture got in.

If the case is still good I would think the inter parts should be the same as other GM cars. A generator shop could tell you this in a few minutes....Tedd
I'm also in the California Sierras If you are close I may know a shop near you that can help....Tedd

Sorry I just re read your post and I see funds are the problem. I'll look through my junk and see if I have something that might work that I can let you use, no guarantees, every time I promise something I find It's been pilfered. I'll PM you if I find one tomorrow or the next day...Tedd
Thank you Tedd, Larry, And Eric for your time. I will post if I make any progress. Tedd-I am 30 mins from Quincy,CA. I had it checked at John's Automotive-Electrical Specialist in Quincy.
Update on my '55. Got the original starter completely rebuilt (omg it is magnificent)Special thanks to the gang at Buchanan Auto Elect. in Oakland,CA. "at least the case was still good". Car fired right up after new ignition points, cleaned the plugs, and fresh fuel. No belching smoke, idled right away. Got it warm, changed the oil & filter, lifters sound good-after sitting for TWENTY years.
Thanks again to those "looking out" in my previous posts. I'll try to get a vid posted in case anyone is interested in the car.
