Question about bat winged air cleaners
John I don't know about 53 but I know they were used form 54 to 56 on Oldsmobiles and the same period for Cadillacs. I don't think there were any changes during this period and don't know if there were any differences between Olds and Cadillac. If there were they were very minor.
There is I think six or seven variations. 1952 is tall, has a tapped nutsert on the bottom section for a spark plug wires bracket oriented to the rear by distributor. Both wet and dry types with different stenciling. 1953-55 Oldsmobile are pretty close as the other guy mentioned, tall but no nutsert. Also wet and dry types seen. Cadillac is close or the same. 1956 Oldsmobile, Caddy and Packard are the same top but bottom section is shorter to fit under lower hood profiles. I've seen one dry type on a local '56 Olds so was still standard offering in that year. Not sure if Packard used these in 1955 but they may have.
The Oldsmobile Chassis Parts Book shows for group 3.402, "Air Cleaner Assembly" the following for the 4GC:
1952-1956 (standard) (service type) part number 1552670
1952-1956 (oil bath) (service type) part number 1552671
1957 had different part numbers.
