Pls help!!! Do I need a new crankshaft for the 56 S88?
I bought a 56 Super 88 convertible and it has a normal Hydramatic tranny.
Normally as far as I know the Super 88 and 98 in 56 were equipped with the "new" Jetaway and so I bought a Jetaway, had it refurbished in America and now we try to put it into the Super 88 convertible.
BUT!!
It does not fit!!
The crankshaft for the Hydramatic seems to be different from the crankshaft for the Jetaway!
Can you confirm that?
Is there an adapter to be used?
What about the balancing of the crankshaft, is that the same for both trannies?
Is there anybody out there who has a good crankshaft for a 56 324 engine made for the Jetaway?
Allegedly the engine block is different too, when a Jetaway was installed??
Thanks for your help.

Should be the same. In 56 they used both the dual coupling hydro and later in that year the jetaway but as far as I know they all bolt up the same. I have seen exchanges both ways. Something doesn't seem right. Was your engine a stick type before you rebuilt it?and I know of no adapter that was used for that era Olds.Sorry for so little help....Tedd

Tedd,
you may be right, we found the problem.
For the use of the Hydramatic there was a pilot bearing in the crankshaft and there was a sheet metal cover on top of it that looked as if it was the end of the crankshaft.
We finally found that we can take the cover off and get to the pilot bearing.
We took the pilot bearing out and old of a sudden the **** at the front of the first fluid coupling of the Jetaway fit into the end of the crankshaft as it should be!
But:
Why are there two different numbers for Olds crankshafts?
One number for manual transmisson and Hydramatic and
one different number for the crankshaft with Jetaway transmission?
Also why are there different engine block numbers for the Jetaway?
