Olds 303 Value?
Could I get some input on what this engine is worth? This is my first time working on a 53 Olds Super 88 4 door which I purchased without a engine and trans. I want to keep it all olds so........Thanks for your help and time.

Seems high to me from what I've seen around my part of the country. But these are getting harder to find, so you may have to pay a little more. What part of California are you in? I know of a rebuilt 324 from a 1955, would that work for you?

They are getting harder to find but that is high. I am sure it is a core and a rebuild will easily cost over $3,000. I would go for a 324. The 55 model John mentioned would be a good one since the 55 had about 20 more hp than a 54.

Thank you for the info. I'm new with the oldsmobile engines and everything in general.

I also would look for a 324, not that there is anything wrong with a 303, but there are probably more to be found 324 out there, they are almost the same engine with a few internal changes and more HP. That engine that John has sounds like it may be worth looking at...Tedd

Hi, Noted from your first contribution to this forum that you have a '53 Olds Super 88 4dr and that you are new to the world of vintage Oldsmobiles.
I have a '53 Super 88 2dr sdn, pretty well dead stock that has 77 k on the odometer. I bought the car in October, if you have not done so yet I would suggest that you read through my topic here on this forum, might give you a little insight as to what you are getting into.
I live in Ventura, have been messing with Oldsmobiles for many years, therefore, I have a pretty good idea of where the good parts sources are.
If you are thinking about re-powering your car you might want to consider keeping the 303, there is an excellent rebuilder of Olds engines, Mondelo, located in Paso Robles.

It might be a good idea to keep the 303 but before getting in touch with Lyn Welfringer at Mondello in Paso Robles, OP should do a threadsearch here on CO and pretty much anywhere else on the internet, including the BBB. That should be enough to convince him to stay away at all costs.

blucar if you actually dealt with Mondello in Paso Robles and got good service then you should buy a lottery ticket. Referring somebody to them is some of the worst advice you could possible provide. Just do a search on here and you will see what 69442ragtop and I are talking about. There are nightmares and nightmares about Lyn Welfringer. Go look for yourself.

Mondello in Paso Robles built the 403 Olds engine I have in my '50 Olds 88, I found Lynn to be helpful. It did take a little longer than planed to get the engine. Modello suggested the 403 in lieu of one of the other Olds engines, I wanted a 2004R trans which bolted right up to the 403. Wm.
