Smile Noise In Front When Turning ('55 Olds)

Recently noticed a slight sound when in a turn to right or left(when going 25- 30 m.p.h.).Sounds like wheel bearing noise but right one was replaced about 1500 miles ago,and left side bearing was pulled, checked, and repacked since then. Any ideas? Help appreciated! Forgot to mention that front brake shoes were recently replaced. Larry

Does the car have power steering and does the noise stop after 30 mph? It is hard to diagnose a noise on a venue like this. Can you describe the noise a little better. Is it a low growl or high pitched?

It's a rough growling noise sounds just like a wheel bearing noise ,but only in deep turns to either left or right. Don't hear it once the car is going straight, and your'e more likely to hear it while cornering or in a "sweeping curve" such as a interstate ramp, and mostly at lower speeds. Larry

Could it be coming from your power steering pump? Will it make the sound sitting still and turning the wheel?
I had a weird noise coming from my right side during very low speed turns and found the hub cap was a little loose. Its fun chasing noises.

First make sure it's not your power steering pump, then to wheel bearings and brakes.

Larry - I was getting weird noises and was having problems locating it. Finally found my motor mounts were bad.

It doesn't sound like a power steering pump. I would go back and do a very close inspection of the wheel bearings. Make sure they are tightened correctly and have plenty of grease in the bearings. I can' imagine what else it would be.

how are your rubber bushings on the suspension equipment? Possible one may be gone causing a rattle?

X2 on the wheel bearings. Stranger things than a bad bearing out of the box have happened. When you replaced the bearings did you also replace the races?...Tedd

Unfortunately, probably all the replacement bearings are made in China. Does anybody know if somebody make a roller bearing replacement. I know they are available for tri-5 Chevy's. I imagine those are different bearings from an Olds.

A month ago while getting ready for my trip we pulled the wheels and were getting ready to pack the bearings when I noticed a race that was washed out. I was just lucky to find it there was no noise or vibration that would have given me a indication of the bad things to come, its a good thing that you at least are getting a noise to help you track down the problem.....Tedd

Smile Found good reason for front end noise

Pulled right front parts to check wheel bearing and brakes for noise and found that when right brake drum was replaced ,three of the wheel studs failed to re-seat and was not letting the wheel lug nuts tighten properly. Thanks for everyone's help. Great site, great people. Larry

It's nice when a catastrophic issue gives a warning. So no more noise?

Glad you found that! Could have been ugly.
Did the wheels not get toured when they were installed?
