Location of vin on frame of 1954-55 Olds 88's

Hi All
I have a couple parts cars and was asked by a new member if I could help him find the vin derivative on the frame of his 1955. With some help from another member here I located it on both a 1954 and a 1955 frames. The 1954 is a much deeper stamp and more clear, but in the same location as the 1955. I decided to share those photos here for a reference in case someone else in the future is looking for this detail. Its on the passenger side rail, on top, just behind the axle a few inches. Pretty much underneath the deck lid hinge on that side. John

The last three pictures are of a 1955 frame. I decided to add those just so people can see how faint the stamp might be. John

Thanks John good work, on the earlier frames I think (if memory serves me at all) they were on the inside rail but if someone knows for sure let me know so I can re remember again. I'll probably won't need to know for another lifetime though..... Tedd

In case someone has numbers that are not stamped well, I'm adding some photos with a tape measure. For the frame that still has the body attached, I ran the tape from the edge of the square bushing over the axle to the numbers.

Then on a bare frame. I'm running the tape measure from the hole where the same bushing attaches to the frame. This is on a loose frame section I removed from a 1954. I had forgot about this one earlier and it also has a nice clear stamp.

John,
I need to verify Vin on '68 442 frame. Where is it and can I see it using a mirror, or will body need lifted?

Brian, I think you'll likely have to lift the body off the frame to see it. I'm pretty sure the 1968 was on top of the frame underneath the drivers door. Here's an old thread that has some pictures. Also, the 1968-72 Cutlass/442 frames will fit, but the 1968 crossmember under the engine is a little different in appearance. If you think it may have been changed you can at least verify if its a 1968 frame or not without too much trouble. I can probably get some pictures of what I describing if that would help. John

Thanks John. After seeing the location in your pics, I've decided I no longer need to verify the frame VIN.... :-)
