ID for '56 Olds Power Brakes

Is there an easy way to ID whether a 56 Olds has Bendix or Delco Moraine Power Brakes?

If I'm not wrong the master cylinder on a delco moraine is attached with 4 bolts to the booster and the base looks square, on the Bendix it's 3 bolts and the base would be triangular (see pics)

Thanks! Are the 2 interchangeable, ie: could I replace a Bendix on my 98 with a Delco-Moraine unit?

I'm sure they are, if you look at the booster, the side that mounts up against the floor looks identical on both and the part where the line screws into also looks the same. They both came in all 56 models equiped with p/b so I don't see why not

56 could be bendix or moraine, either will work on 56, they interchange from 54 to 57 all models with power brake set up. not sure about 58 etc, but through the yrs ive used these from the models described without a problem

Do you know where I might obtain a rebuild kit for the moraine booster and master cyl. for 1955?
Thanks

Try the kanter link in my signature. If you look under 55 it will only show a bendix kit but I'm sure if you get in contact with them they could either direct you in the right direction or have one in stock. Their website is not the greatest but they are always happy to help

I've had some luck obtaining rebuild pbrake cylinder parts for my '56 from NAPA. Cheaper price and faster delivery. I used the Fussick catalog as NAPA can cross reference the part numbers.

hello I have a problem with the power brake I just get on my oldsmobile (rebuilt by fusick automotive)) Rubber hoses are new and empty the tank tested Started the engine is pressing the brake pedal and it is supported by the wheel brakes are locked on the pedals off the engine and back wheel is released I do not understand. you would need a track or he replaced the power brake. (I'm stuck in the reconstruction of oldsmobile by themselves Song) thank you

If Fusic rebuilt the unit it should junction properly. Did you bench bleed the master cyl. before installing? After installing, did you bleed all 4 wheels starting from r.rear, left rear, right front, left front.? If all this is good, you should be able to put your foot on the pedal and start the engine. If the vacuum is working, the pedal should go down when the engine starts. You need to adjust the shoes to the drums also. There is a check valve in the vacuum hose from the manifold to the vacuum canister under the floor. You can pull the line off the downstream side and see if there is any vacuum there. If not, the check may be inoperative. Good Luck!

I don't have one in front of me to reference, but you may want to invest in a 1955 Oldsmobile Shop Manual. You can find them on eBay and Amazon, book or CD format.

My 56 Olds 98 has P/B, on some occassions when I press the brake especially when I get on the gas a bit, the pedal goes to the floor. I need to pump it to get the brakes working. What is happening and what do I need to do?

Yes there should be a check valve between the booster and the base of the carburetor. Any vacuum check valve from a parts store with the right size vacuum fittings should work. Other than that I was not able to understand what the issue you were having was...

Unhappy power brake blues!!

The check valve is on the end of the metal line coming out the rear of the base of the carburator. The metal line screws into the check valve( which is a metal thing about 2 inches long) and has a hose clamped onto the end of that. The hose goes to the brake booster AND the vaacuum storage tank mounted on the driver's side of the frame. If you unplug the vacuum line from the engine, yes it will stall. Any vacuum leak will kill performance and hurt the operation of the power brakes. Put your foot on the brake pedal and apply pressure; start the engine; if the pedal goes down, the power unit is working. If no brakes, check the shoes, adjustment, air in lines, etc. Good luck!!
