How to confirm original color on 56 88?

Thanks everyone for the help. I do have pics of the car, unfortunately I'll have to ask for the cowl tag.
I'm sure I will have more questions as this purchase moves forward.
I'm a bit sentimental towards 56 Super 88's. My fathers only new car was a 56 White over black, black/red interior. The car I've found is a low milage original with one repaint. It has the same interior but White over red.
Would there be a value hit if I painted the red, black? It such a nice car I hesitate to do this but, my

Not to worry my convertible was an ugly single color light green and the polar white and Bentham red made all the différance in the world. Only once did it come up at a points show and judges all agreed it was correct as long as it was a factory color or colors. Doubtful it will ever come up in another show or at a sale....Tedd

Personally I think your car and Tedd's look better in red and white. My 54 was originally solid Capri Blue and had been repainted different colors twice. I love red cars but for some reason I thought the blue and white looked better and they are both original 54 colors.

I don't disagree, the red looks great. But memories are hard to let go of. Here's a pic of me at age 2 with my dad's 56 Super 88.

Great picture. You should send that in to Hemming Motor News and see if they publish it in their Unintentional Portraits section. It would be perfect. I sent on in of me with my brother and sister taken in about 1954 with my Aunt and Uncles 1952 Studebaker in the background. It took about a year but they published it.
I bet those smokestacks are not still standing. That spot probably became an environmental nightmare.

That's a great idea! Yes the stacks are gone. My dad was a mechanical engineer and worked for Phillips 66. We actually lived in a company camp for a couple of years, right across the street from a butadiene plant. Not the best place to be.

Someone with more 'authority' (experience) than myself will surely chime in at some point. In my brief survey I found the following (from modestly reputable sources, one identified below):
56 = year of manufacture
36 = 88
37 = Holiday Coupe
D = Super 88
S = Special Two Tone color; S= Roof Color
20 = Festival Red
60 = Alcan White
That's all I have thus far.

Body No. BW 4038
BW = Wilmington Delaware
Generally, the number following the plant (BW) would indicate the sequential body (production) number of this vehicle at this plant. However, I don't know if the body (production) numbers began with the number one (1). Many years the body (production) numbers began at number 1000; which would make this vehicle a body (production) number of 3038. Clueless if this is correct.

NOTE: The following is taken from a 1955 Oldsmobile - not a 1956 Oldsmobile from a CO member

Also, from an Olds factory car and accessory price list dated Nov. 3, 1954 the following:
K3: padded instrument panel
U2: 4-way electric seat adjuster
U4: electric window lifts (4 windows)

Thanks to all of you for the support. You've confirmed what I thought I was looking at. The seller and I have come to terms and I should have the sale completed next week. I'll post the back story and pics of this original 10,000 mile car soon.
