Generator rebuild question

Anyone here ever tear down and restore their generator? I have a nice rebuilt unit but the front piece under the pulley/fan has a section around the perimeter cracked off, and I was thinking about taking one off a donor to replace. Is it a PITA to take apart and reassemble these? Also, was the fan/pulley originally painted black from the factory or zinc plated or something else?

Your last question first, the generator is a low satin black when new.The harmonic balancer is engine color(green) and the generator pulley is also a satin / flat black. The generator fan I believe is zinc/ galvanized color. There should be no problem dissembling and re assembling as I remember no special tools were needed...Tedd
