Finally a six-pack for the 50
Finally a six-pack for the 50
I have had my OL396 intake and a box full of Holly 94's sitting in the garage for over ayear. Finally decided it was time to use them. My car is a 1950 Olds 98.

Here is the original setup. It ran ok, but no power at all.

Here is the setup as it was when I bought it.

Here is the new valley pan. Had to trim around a half inch off each side to make it fit. gave it a quick polish.

Here is the intake installed.

Carbs are on.

One minor set back the intake only has one water bung. I needed two. So I drilled and tapped one of the rear water jacket covers for the heater return hose.

Finally all the plumbing.

I also replaced the fuel lines with 3/8" tubing and installed a Holley electric fuel pump.
Here is a short video.

I hope you didn't put that setup on a stock 303 and expect huge power gains. I don't know what you would expect with a stock engine putting out 135 horsepower and like 7.25 to 1 compression. Was a new cam chosen or any work done to the bottom end?
I have that EXACT setup that I am going to start working on in a couple of days. I have many questions for you out of curiosity:
What size power valve did you use for the outer and primary carbs? Did you block of the outer ones?
What did you do about the throttle plates on the secondaries? Did you file them so they will close without sticking or did you buy the new ones from vintage speed?
What size jetting did you use?
What did you do with the throttle valve linkage? Could you possibly post detailed pictures of it?
What fuel pressure regulator did you use?
And most importantly, how does it run?
Could possibly make my life a lot easier during my swap. Any info would be appreciated.

Ok well thanks for the compliments. First 59 59 59 I really don't have this car for performance (I have a procharged Corvette for that), I just wanted the nostalgic speed look. And it really is running and sounding a lot better than it did with that rear draft carb it had. The throttle response is smother, the automatic transmission kick down is a lot stronger. I'm happy with the results, and that's all that matters. And only other thing I have done is true dual exhaust.

Excellent! All of my Oldsmobiles have engines with 3 carbs (1966). One suggestion: get rid of those rubber hoses and use steel lines, like brake line, with double lap flares. Or at a minimum, copper (but it stress cracks easier with vibration). The factory didn't use rubber on top because of the possibility of engine fires. The heat is hard on the rubber lines.
Run to Rund. Thanks for advise on hoses. The reason I went with the clear hose is to create the old school look. It is fuel line, and I bought quite a bit in case I need to replace some. The car is not used a lot, I will make sure I inspect things before I pull it out. I have been thinking of polished copper or steel lines. I left the fitting on the end of the 3/8" line in case I change my mind (which I do very often). I am always open to advice from members.
That set up looks fantastic.gif maybe one day for my 53
