Balancer/Pulley Removal Tool for 55 324

Can someone tell me what type of puller they used to remove the damper/pulley on a 324? It's on a 55 Olds 98.

Thanks
Darren

You don't need a puller. Just remove the bolt in the center of the balancer and it should slide off the crank. It might take a little nudge but it is not pressed on.

What redoldsman said. I've pulled balancers off some real rust buckets with nothing more than a wrench and a rubber hammer.... Tedd

Thanks for the heads up. These engines are a little older vintage than what I'm used to. The advice here is very valuable.

Jan. 2, 2020 Did you get the balancer off ok? I had to tear my engine down a second time after rebuild because the machine shop had left out the oil gallery plugs that you find behind the cam gear. The balancer was stuck on because of the sealant I used following the shop manual instructions. I bored a hole in each of the 3 spokes in the balancer and tapped them to either 5/16 or 3/8. Then I was able to use a standard harmonic balancer puller available at NAPA.

As has been indicated, often the balancer comes off easily. The '55 Olds Shop Manual indicates the same, but says if it is stuck a gear puller can be used. Just don't pull on the ring.

Yes sir, it was stuck so we had to make a puller and pull on the inner ring of pulley.
