'56 Olds A/C vent question

Does anyone know how to disassemble the in-dash factory A/C vents on the '56 Super 88? I would like to take them apart to have them re-chromed. Thank you!

Thanks. Mine are out of the dash already. My question is how to separate the rotating parts of the vent. There's no apparent seam or fasteners to allow this...

Apparently it is a "press together" type of fit. Between the two parts there is a felt seat and a retainer spring. If you have a 1956 Oldsmobile shop manual look on pages 14-12 and 14-13. Fig. 14-15 is a cross-sectional drawing of the outlet assembly, composed of the bezel, the nozzle, the felt seat and the retainer spring. There is a description of the procedure to use to replace the felt seat when sufficient tension is lost. Supposedly the nozzle can be removed from the bezel by tapping on it carefully with a wooden block from the air hose end.

I do have factory A/C in my '56. My friend Ozzie has nailed the answer to your question ^^^^^^^^. The '56 Shop Manual has a chapter dedicated to the A/C system. Highly recommended reading.

Michael, not to steal a thread, but if you have your A/C disassembled, can you take a picture of the plastic manifold? It's 9.263 below. Very hard to find.

Thanks guys, that’s exactly what I needed. I think I still have the original manifold you are looking for... more to come!

Michael, if you can find that manifold and you don’t want it, I do. A member here, lonestarjarhead, gave me one years ago. It was pretty well melted from years in the hot Texas sun. I was able to “re-melt” it enough to fit fairly well, but I would really like to have a better fitting one.
