56 License plate brackets

Hey guys! I am in need of the front license plate bracket for my 56, does anyone have one? Do they interchange for 54-56? I have my original 1956 California license plates I want to mount the front one Also, I am assuming the rear plate just mounts to the rear bumper and there is no bracket, it just mounts to the two top holes.. Is that correct or is there a bracket? If so, I need that one too. Thanks guys!!

Sorry so late answering, I'm also in CA. My '55 yes, just use the holes in the rear bumper. Sorry but I am not using my front plate and don't have a bracket. Just the 2 holes in the bumper, they don't really line up with the plate. Of course the easiest thing to do would be drill holes in the plate to line up with the bumper. But if you have an original plate, maybe you don't want to do that.

Thanks but I found a front bracket and it's already on and I was able to use my original California 1956 license plates! DMV accepts the original plates if they are for the correct year of the car.

Ok, dumb question. A little off topic. I know the CA legislature was working on new legislation to use old plates again.

How do I do that? I have a 1974 Capri, and I have the original '74 plates, but it is not currently registered with those plates. I would love to go back to my originals, blue.

It's a $45 fee but I'm almost positive the YOM program is only 69 and earlier.

Thanks, I wasn't quite sure how I would have missed that. I don't think the current legislation has passed or been implemented yet. I think it expands on what is current.

Do you have a source for the front bracket, or one time part? The main reason I didn't put my front plate on was, no bracket.

I got lucky and found one on the Facebook page but not sure of another. There are a lot for different models that look similar even on eBay that I have a feeling will work fine

Thanks. Did a quick search, and nothing pops up.

I realize this is a super old post but were any of you successful in getting an off brand bracket? The holes in the bumper are 5in apart and everything I find either doesn't have distance of the holes or when I finally get a hold of someone they are not the same distance apart.

I don't know if this is any help to you or not, but the part number for the '56 front plate bracket is 567624. '55 and '54 have different part numbers so they won't fit the '56.

If no one here can help you out, check out EBay. I found one for a '56 with the correct part number but it's very very expensive. I'd use a coat hanger before I'd spend that kind of money!

I just redrilled the holes and mounted it without the brackets.. For about 6 years I ran without a front plate but after a few Hwy Patrol stops I got nervous and put the front one back on though none of the cops said a word. I think they were all car guys.... Tedd

It would also be fairly easy just to take a couple of strips of metal, drill some holes and build a bracket using the existing holes in the bumper. The plate will cover the bracket, so no way to even tell it's non-standard. I also in CA which requires a front plate, but I've never had mine on.

Thank you, good to hear I can get away with it for a little bit. I ordered custom plates so I'd have to wait for those to come in before I drilled new holes in it, they probably don't want spare holes in the temp plates. I'll look into making a separate bracket and see what we can come up with.
