'55 S88 Convert to Electric Fuel Pump
'55 S88 Convert to Electric Fuel Pump
I'm looking for a rebuild kit or a "new" unit to replace my fuel pump (#4713) - fuel moving from tank to pump but nothing is going up to the carb.
I saw Tedd's comment in an older thread (https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...-324-a-162259/) about replacing the fuel pump to a Newport electric unit. Would you have the model info or a site I can visit to see if I'm able to convert my '55? Right now the top (vacuum) is not in use, the wipers run off it's own motor.
Thanks, as always, for your help and guidance.
Jen

Jen, I had one on the 54 I used to own. I used a Carter pump and was very pleased with it. I am not familiar with the Newport pump. You will need to mount the pump in the rear near and below the fuel tank. I would recommend using a relay and a toggle switch under the dash so you can turn it off when you want. On my 54 I added an oil pressure switch so it shut the fuel pump off if you lost oil pressure. This is a little more involved but a great safety measure. You could leave the old pump on but I would recommend putting a blockoff plate in it's place. Your Olds fuel pump has the same pattern as a big block Chevy and those blockoff plates are readily available. Good luck with this.
I would have to go back and reread the Newport post but from memory (for what it's worth) but as I remember the Newport system is only to replace the original vacuum wiper pump. If you have already replaced the vacuum with an electric system Newport system won't help you any, it's strictly a wiper fix, nothing to do with the fuel pump. Should you want to put a cheaper pump on your car you can replace it with a pump made for a 391 which already has electric wipers and doesn't need the dual pump system. Sorry if I mislead you if or made it unclear....Tedd
While electric pumps do work, and I use them if I don't have much option, mechanical pumps are more reliable, and quieter. Electrics can be noisy, and I have seen a higher failure rate for them on street cars.
