55 Olds Door Hinges - Paint Question

Does anyone know how these were assembled? Were they placed on the car prior to paint? See photo - this car has overspray (a repainted car) inside the hinge - would they all have had this or??

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Wow, I joined yesterday and can't believe I can answer, at least partially. I have a 55 88 Holiday in original paint.

The spray pattern on mine suggests the body and door were painted together. However, it also looks like the base color and door jamb was painted prior to the door being hung. I would say on a two-tone car, the bottom color, or in my case, blue, was painted in place.

The color was a little thin toward the interior of the car, and gets lighter on both the hinge and the door jamb. In short the spray pattern matched, at least on the dark color. The white was harder to tell. I can also see a bit of over spray of blue inside the hinge area, exactly as someone would be pointing a spray gun at the hinge.

Great info - thank you - and glad you joined up. Would love to see a picture of your Holiday - (and the hinge area if you have) -

I can get you a picture in a bit. I have also posted pictures in the newbie section.

After seeing pictures of a lot of other cars being restored. I feel a lot better about mine.

Saw your post there...nice car - west coast >> east coast when it comes to what a 58 year old car looks like.

I have a plain 88 Holiday Sedan - not running but untouched and originial - and a Super 88 Holiday Sedan (restoring) - loaded car less A/C.

Also restoring a 3 speed stick 88 2 door post.

thanks for your help

Gordon,

Sorry, but I'm not sure how to post thumbnails, so the full pictures are in this post.

Glad I could help. My car is pretty original and hasn't been worked on in about 20 years.

If you have any other questions about originality on the base 88, glad to help.
