55 Holiday 88 Rear suspension
55 Holiday 88 Rear suspension
To all:
I took m '55 to car week down in Monterey this year at the end of August. Fun times.
I had a small incident. When loaded, the rear suspension completely collapsed down to the frame. Which also caused the drive shaft to hit the bottom of the body in the tunnel. Take my son out of the back seat, everything is normal. Ok, old cars, old springs. But what I found, was more interesting.
Everything is normal now. I just finished putting in an all new rear suspension. New leaf springs and all new rubber and bushings. Drives much better, less floating on the road. Almost drives like a regular car!I did find what happened. Some numb nuts at the factory, put the rt rear leaf spring in backwards!! The beefy end should go towards the front. It was to the rear and doing no good whatso ever. In fact, the spring had bent just forward of the axle. Its supposed to be fewer leaves toward the back as they taper off, less weight. Its built so you can’t put it in backwards, but this idiot managed to do it. It had not been messed with and was all original unmolested. I've had this car for 35 years, and it's been in the family since new--so pretty sure the guy at the factory is the culprit. Also, it was short 2 rubber plates that go between the rear end axle housing and the top of the leaf springs.
Ok, I know an assembly line has to move, but really?? So, it doesn’t collapse any more when my son sits in the back seat. Interesting times.
