1956? 324 complete with tranny value?

Got this engine in a 40 Ford I purchased. Haven’t had much luck finding much info on it. What kind of value should be placed on it?. Thx for any input you might have.

Will the engine turn over or is it seized? Where are you located. Is that some kind of adapter on the rear of the transmission that adapts to a enclosed torque tube driveshaft in the 40 Ford? This had to be an old hot rod from way back since this was a popular swap back in the day.

The block casting number and the " dual coupling " transmission Identifies it as being a 1956 .

Well the fella came on to this site for helpful advice about the value of this engine and transmission... Farmdog, if you are still here and not completely discouraged from that answer, I would say yes there is some value to that eng/trans. Unfortunately I am not the guy who knows. Hopefully someone in the know will pipe up. Do you ever go on the Hamb? If a Olds guy doesn't want it maybe someone will want it for a old school rod.. Welcome to the site!

Unless it has been changed the distributor tells me it is a 56. The 54 and 55 still had the distributor with those stupid clips on the cap.

Yes but I believe the transmission is a slant pan not a jet-away (could go ether way in 56). My belief is they would have to be considered core parts at about $300 bucks each depending if the engine turns over and if there is no water present in both..... Just my guess from afar...... Tedd

Tedd, i think it is a jetaway. Due to the silver or aluminum tail shaft housing. Looks like mine in my 57 and i have a 1956 slant pan hydro on another engine in my garage. It has an iron tail shaft and just a little different looking. Just my 2 1/2 cents. Sure like to know where he lives. Mark.

From what I have read and going on my feeble memory, I think I have read that the slant pan was only available on the 88 and not the Super 88 or 98. I think the 88 would have had a 2 barrel carb. Of course this could have been changed along the way which would have been likely since this engine came out of a hot rod. I think you are probably pretty close on value Tedd. If it is frozen then it is worth the parts and scrap value. I can attest the distributor has value and the carb does also. It looks like the harmonic balancer and water pump pulley are missing but valve covers might bring a few bucks.

Very sharp memory Glenn. You are correct on both points. Of course, as noted, lots of things can and did happen to cars over the decades since they were built.

If the engine still turns over and the tranny is in good condition... I'd guess $500 - $600. However, it looks like it's been sitting outside for a long while and will probably need a complete rebuild as long as the rust isn't to deep. Just my 2 cents.

If it was me , I would put that 324 back in that '40 coupe . (After a rebuild , of course . )
Along with 3 Stromberg 97's and a LaSalle transmission .
Wouldn't matter how rusty the cylinders were , just bore it to four inches and use 371 pistons .
Makes it a 346 .

But , that's just me .

I agree with you Charlie but it make take some time and many$$$ to find a LaSalle transmission. That was the thing back in the day. Three Strombergs and finned valve covers. Couldn't get much better.

Thanks *****. I wonder also if he sold it. He joined the same day that he posted it and may not return. Someone needed to save it. I have another 371 bored out 399, cammed, ported and polished head work, boxed rods and dual quads with a slant pan hydro. Old fords just seem right with Olds motors. Picture before dual quads.

I think I just had a orgasm!... Nope wrong again.. If my bucket list wasn't so long that is my dream engine, probably in a 34-35 Gram 4 door, less the two fours and add a row of 97's. Love that old world iron.....Tedd

That is a great picture. The last 40 Ford I drove was in 1965 and it had a 53 Olds engine in it. It belonged to the used car manager at the Buick dealership where I worked. It was a pretty nice old car but the clutch shuddered like crazy because it didn't have the deals on the motor supports to lock the engine in place. I took a brief drive in it and went by and took my girlfriend for a short ride. That girlfriend will be my wife of 55 years in May.

Wow, 55 years. Congratulations Glenn, and an early Happy Anneversary to you and the Misses. She must like your choices in cars. I had a couple of old fords over the years and yes you are right about the shudder. Especially in reverse. I installed the early chatter rods on all of mine. Mounted to the rear of the trans and bolted to the frame. They did help. I also like old black and white movies and this was on last night on cable. Mickey Rooney got duped to be a get away driver and runs the crap out of a 40 ford sedan. There is a good part in the movie where he chain hoist the flathead motor out and installs a "Hopped up Race Motor" Wonder where that sedan is today?
Here is a you tube of that movie.......

In my youth we (I had a partner) had a project 3 window 33 ford hot rod, straight body in primer no rust or major dents but could not get the 303 to run, bought it that way. Impatience frustration and the lack of skills we traded it for Honda motorcycle. Guy got it running in less than a hour. I wish someone at that time could have told me that Oldsmobile distributors turn counter clock wise. I've never forgot that screwup...Tedd
