1955 gear shift selector switch Photo

Looking for pictures of the neutral safety/gear position selector switch on the steering column under the hood. I found a switch on E bay but don't know how it looks installed. Mine was missing....

Here's pictures of a 1954 column. It shows the switch bolted in place, but not wired up. Did this provide what you needed? John

I took a picture of the one on my 54 this afternoon but John's is much better since it is out of the car. It is a way better illustration than mine.

If he needs help with the wiring maybe you could cover that? This column is going to flatoz so I pulled it from the car a while back. It already had the under hood wiring harness removed. John

Thanks guys, that clears up a lot. It made me go back to the parts book

The "EXC. 1955 W/C.A.C" I thought was W/O AC, it is WITH A/C that switch looks like this

The correct one w/o a/c is 1998026 and looks like this and the pictures you guys took.

Should have been more observant....any time somebody needs the switch for a 1955 with A/C...... I GOT ONE!

Guess I should have listened to the old pro here, redoldsman, and just ordered the one from Fusick. Would have saved me $89!

My '55 has a 455 engine out of a 1976 Cutlass that had the TH400 tranmission when I bought it. It is now being replaced with a 200R4 with overdrive and a lock-up torque converter. That 455 was not real good on fuel, as it is a '76 with only 190 HP, thanks to the EPA, it does run on 87 octane. But with only a 3 speed automatic and no lock-up it was not very cheap to run.
Anyway, I am working on modifying the switch to use the gear position indicator in the '55. As the Park position did not exist in 1955 I will need to remove the stop on the switch so it can move to Park and rewire it so I have the electric indicator for R-N-O-D-L, just will not have an indicator for 1st gear on the 2004R.....the rewire & adjusting most likely will be a project all it's own.

Thanks again for the "enlightenment and pictures"!

Gees, only 190 hp! The original 324 had 204,but nothing like the tork of the 455.

As far as the neutral safety switch have you looked into a switch off a mid year 56 it would be wired with the park and reverse in the right location. May save some headaches on wiring and selector location. I've never done this so it may cause more problems than it solves... Just thinking out loud...... Tedd

Tedd, I was like you and thought the 455 was never that low on Horsepower, but read that in '75 a ninety eight was cut to 190 h.p. The '55 324 4 barrel had 202 h.p. or I have misinformed many people ,during the time that I owned it. Larry

Got the OD 200-4R all installed...what a difference OD makes, that 455 with the TH400 was 2100 RPM at 55, now 1500! And with the TV linkage properly adjusted it shifts up and down like a new one.The TH 400 had a vacuum modulator and electric kick down that did not respond well.

Gave up on the gear position switch, the spacing and positions just cannot be used. I replace it with a Dakota Digital sender and digital display. It works great, I mounted it on the column under the hood not on the tranny, just had to make the arm longer to match the throw distance. Now I have safety interlock in P & N and it also does the backup lights.

Had to get another cheapie tach, gut it and make a mounting plate for the display unit. Beats having to count positions when shifting to D!
