1949 0lds rack and pinion

anyone have info on installing rack and pinion in 1949 olds 98? my gearbox is bad and original steering is where crossmember for 1972 olds 350 needs to go.

The 49 Olds has a very antiquated front suspension on it. It has king pins and bushings rather than ball joints. I think the only way you could put rack and pinion on it would be to cut the frame off and put a new clip (I hope we don't go off on the definition of a front clip again) under it. You are talking a massive undertaking.

What Red said. Cost would be much much more than having the steering box rebuilt by a expert..... Tedd

Went ahead and did it anyway, I fabracated brackets for 1992 cavalier rack and tie rods, and fitted 1976 chev van steering column. now has 1972 olds 350 and automatic with pwr steering. all works good, in 1949 olds 98. also added 1978 master cyl with vacumn boost mounted on firewall
