Keisler SS700 5 Speed Overdrive

Just ordered one, I hope to see it this year, we'll see. I refuse to modify my tunnel, and they claim it will fit a console car without cutting. Just a little over 3800...

No body mods, rated for 700 foot lbs of torque, made in the USA, choice of OD ratio....very exciting. I gather the entire Power Tour at 1:1 must have influenced your change... I am looking forward to the results both mechanically and from a driver's perspective. Although the price for the gearbox is higher than other alternatives, the cost is offset by the trans tunnel mod requirement.

The Legend SS700 is basically a beefed up T-56, in fact designed by the same guy who originally designed the T-56, so I expect it will take quite a bit of abuse. My trans. is mostly Autogear, but with a 3:73 rear, and 5 buck gas, I need the O.D..
I'm going to use factory z-bar.

I have the RS600. 5th gear was defective in my unit, sent it back to Keilser and they repaired it (hopefully) and shipped it back in a matter of days. The shop is re-installing it this weekend.

1-4th was great, looking forward to using 5th on the highway once winter gets the eff outta here!

Shoot! I have a TKO 600 going in my Cutlass as we speak. I hope it's good to go. That would stink if it was defective!

I wasn't expecting much service from Keisler once I realized 5th gear was defective, but I must say I was pleasantly surprised. They sent a truck to pick up the trans from the shop the day after it was removed, they inspected, repaired, and shipped it back in about a week. Shop started to reinstall it the day after they got it back.

By the way, I'm using Modern Muscle in Plainfield for this job. Amazing customer service there, I had them do some work on my 05 GTO and assuming this transaction with the Cutlass goes smoothly, they will be the only performance shop I use for all future projects.

Glad to hear it! Modern Muscle dynoed my car today, and said the trans feels very nice. They will road test tomorrow and then (if weather is ok) I'll bring it back home in a few days!

Hopefully the RS700 is a great transmission, and I hope my RS600 is too.

Latest news
Keisler shipped a trans. with the shifter positioned dead center, which won't work with the 4 speed cutout on my car. They weren't aware that automatic and 4 speed humps are different, at least on Oldsmobiles. I sent them a bunch of pics of the cutout and Hurst shifter, showing how the cutout is not centered, but towards the driver. Keisler called today and they're shipping me a trans. With an offset shifter. Also, they are working on a shifter handle for 70-72 Ols 4 speed cars. Great customer service !

I have approx 200 miles on my new BB and TKO600. No problems with the trans at all. Having an overdrive is really nice. I can drive at 60 at 1900 rpm. 5th gear is awesome. The trans is extremely smooth. Compared to my Muncie M-20 that was kind of wobbly here and there. Just not tight. The new trans is as tight as a drum. The shifter was located in the right spot as well. VERY satisfied.

Z, I can't wait to get the trans., and install. Olds 4 speed cars require the offset shifter, but Keisler had never seen an 70-72 factory 4 speed, so they had no reference for fitment.

I spoke to them at Carlisle about this very point. Until very recently they were not aware of the shifter differences between the 69-69 cars and the 70-72 console cars. Now they apparently are. They have a very cool shifter plate that mounts on their transmissions and offsets the shift lever to the left, as it is on a Muncie. I also saw their new in-house 700 ft-lb six speed. A mere $4000, and oh, that doesn't include the $600 hydraulic throwout bearing.

A used T56 and Weir bellhousing is looking better all the time.

So wait, if you have a console car, they offset the shifter to the drivers side, then the shift handle offsets back to the passenger side to center it?

No, the opposite. Their normal shifter is centerline mounted on top of the trans, so it works with the 70-72 consoles. Previously, the 64-69 cars (and 70-72 non-console, if you cared about stick position) required a shift lever offset to the left. Their new offset shifter mechanism puts the stick right where it needs to be for the 64-69 cars.

I was referring to a 72 with console. I would expect they would keep the shifter centered and suggest a little cutting.

Well actually their center shifter mounting is fine for an automatic console car NOT a factory console 4 speed car, this was my issue, I've been sending pics for a month. I just rec'd a call tag to return my trans., they're shipping one with an offset shifter mount which should fit the cutout in my floor pan, and then we'll deal with fabbing a shift handle/adaptor to fit the console. I'm sending dimensions of my OEM Hurst handle.
The whole reason to buy the SS700 is so you don't have to cut up the floor pan, I would have bought a TKO a long time ago if it fit without butchering..

Well, to be technically correct, the problem with the centerline mounted shifter isn't the console, it's the factory hole in the floorpan and hump. The reality is that the centerline mounted shifter works fine with the factory MT console so long as you don't mind cutting the floor. Since you don't want to do that, yes, you need the offset shifter and a fabricated "L" bracket to move the lever back over in line with the console. Interestingly, this is what Hurst did on their aftermarket shifters for the 70-72 console cars, back when they made them. The factory Hurst shifters angled the top of the shift mechanism (as your photos show) and the stick had a matching angle at the bottom. The aftermarket shifters simply had an "L" and a straight stick.

Keisler SS700 latest Update

I just rec'd my trans. with a modified shifter position and angled stub, now this look better! ( Sorry for the huge clamp, all I could find..)
The angled stub places the shifter handle close to 90*, about the same as the OEM Hurst, and the vertical portion is about inline with the trans. centerline. Now, on to the install
Sorry I didn't rotate the pics..
I neglected to write that Keisler tech support and engineering have really worked hard to address my concerns with fitment in our factory 4 speed cars..and modified the shifter stub angle after I sent pics, and a trace of my original shifter handle, Keisler ROCKS!

yea Memphis....Hoping to be in the Galaxie but still have lots of thrashing to do myself. Short list
-pull floor shift column from donor car
-rebuild paint and install said column
-new wheels here monday or tuesday will need tire mounted and mounted on car
-install 4 speed
-mark for hole in floor
-cut floor and carpet and and install a 4speed hump
-install shifter, boot and ring
-minor wiring repair
-add seat belts to car
-and a few other things I am not thinking about

Should be a cakewalk compared to 2001. I got a bare block back from the machine shop for my old 78 Malibu on Wed AM and put 50 miles on it Friday night before leaving for a 1200 mile trip Sat morning.

Are you mounting the Keisler SS700 to a stock bellhousing?

Finally! We installed my SS700 yesterday, no major issues, just had to use a 40 ton press to modify the x-member to gain a little more clearance for the rear of the trans.. not a big deal, if my body mounts were new I would have had enough clearance in the tunnel. The shifter position is just right for a factory 4 speed car. A couple pics show measurements for the original shifter, I'll take some pics later to show the shift handle mounted up to the Keisler.

Keisler SS700 latest Update

More pics..the tape shows that the shifter location is going to be very close to stock, so I'm not expecting any console fitment issues. Just got to sort out the backup lights, speedo cable, and wait on the driveshaft.
