rebuilding th350 or 200r4
ok i want to switch my jetaway for a th350 shortshaft or 200r4..
im going to the junkyard to get a tranny and rebuild
and maybe put in a shift kit ...
I currently have a 68 cutlass w/350 engine
I have a few questions...
1. with a 200r4 will i need to change the driveshaft ?
2. from what i read i need to get a new gas pedal. i can read on that in other posts.
3. can i rebuild a transmission economically myself? and can i do it?
I am very mechanically inclined .
4. will i need any special tools to rebuild a tranny?
5. if getting a 200r4 should i put shift kit.

1. with a 200r4 will i need to change the driveshaft ? Maybe not. Jetaway is 28 1/4" from bellhousing to shaft input, 200R4 is 27 11/16". You may have enough on the spline to get away with it.
2. from what i read i need to get a new gas pedal. i can read on that in other posts. Why?
3. can i rebuild a transmission economically myself? and can i do it?
I am very mechanically inclined . Probably, you're the best one to judge that. Just get the right rebuild manual or video to help you along. Save a ton of money too
4. will i need any special tools to rebuild a tranny? Very likely.
5. if getting a 200r4 should i put shift kit. Are you planning on using it hard? Most 200R4s are pretty decent in the shifting dept on a rebuild. The 200R4 would definitely give you better mileage, and with the gear ratios on 1,2,3 and OD I don't think you need a shift kit for everyday use
6. forgot to mention its a floor shift.. do i need to do anything special for this? I would think you might need to have different cables from the shifter to the tranny. Someone with expertise will chime in. In any event, if you need new cables, they can be custom made at reasonable cost. .

I can add a couple things:
1. No driveshaft change required. In my 68 cutlass, I changed the original 2-speed automatic with a 2004R. Move the transmission crossmember to the rear-most bolt holes, modify or get a flexible dip-stick tube, ditch the transmission vacuum line for a TV cable, a TV cable bracket and linkage corrector kit will also be required at the carb, and figure out a TC lock-up switch (depends on your rebuild and TC). Also, if you're running highway gears, you may not want/need the overdrive because you'll lug the motor in 4th. In that case, a TH350 might make you just as happy and be a simpler solution.
2. A new gas pedal is not required. (unless yours is broken)
3. Don't know
4. Yes
5. Up to you. What are your plans for the car. Is the 350 built?
6. Yes. Joe P. recently outlined it in another post.

I like two things about the 200r4 swap. 1st gear is going to give you the seat of the pants feel of a muscle car, and the OD, will give you some economy!
Its all on you bud! Let us know how it turns out!

I would not even consider the t350. I have 5 speed stick with overdrive in my Vista Cruiser and it is a very drivable car. You will enjoy the car much more with the overdrive. Much better mileage, less cruising rpm and more performance.
