TH400 Selector Bracket
TH400 Selector Bracket
Anyone have a close up picture of one of these? Particularly the rectangular slot the shifter cable hold down goes in. My Dual Gate will not go into 1st gear and I'm wondering if that hole is possibly stamped wrong or the bracket on the pan is somehow to blame. Any other suggestions are welcome. It seems to be off by about half a tooth.
I have a 70sx conv with original normal console shift and I added dual gate. I have Same exact issue. I used an Original dual gate shifter and gm cable of correct length but selector bracket is repro. I still have not fixed it but I am thinking I need to make that rectangular slot longer so the cable can move more but it might throw off the park setting.
Exactly, I already elongated the slot and tomorrow I'll put it on and see where I'm at. I added roughly 3/8 inch more travel by elongating the slot towards the front. I've got the car to start in neutral but it's so close to reverse occasionally it will lurch, can't have that. Once I get 1st gear I can reset the neutral safety switch and be gtg.
George, are you talking about the hole in the floorboard? Many years ago I cut out the floorpans from a couple cars I'd parted out. The brown panel is from a 1971 Cutlass Supreme with the single gate shifter. The green one is from a 1972 Cutlass Supreme with a dual gate. Yes, the hole for the dual gate is further forward than the single gate. Here's some photos. John

While looking for the picture of the part from where I bought it, The Parts Place. It seems it's no longer available. This by itself raises questions. The cable pin and the cable support bracket which mounts on the trans pan are still listed but the selector lever is not.
Maybe it was removed because of problems?
My rectangular slot is biased towards the rear of the lever which may or may not be the problem. This is the reason I wanted to see another one to gauge mine by. Today I lengthened the slot forward about 3/8 inch. I guess I'll know tomorrow.

I thought I could easily lay my hands on one, but I struck out. If your still having problems by next weekend let me know and I'll try again to come up with a factory one to measure and photograph for you. John
The original floorshift selector levers that came on the Cutlass/442 are different than the new ones available,or the GM replacement. The ones available now are the same as the 70's Camaro/Firebird,and possible others. If you actually lay them next to each other, you can see that the positioning is NOT exactly the same.
The problem is solved. It turns out it was the new lever. By making the slot 3/8 inch longer and pushing the pin as far forward as it will go it now works fine. I now have all gears and with a slight adjustment of the neutral safety/reverse switch it works like a dream.
Thanks for all the input all.

can you guy still post the pictures,I am converting a B&M floor shifter to an original Shifter and I am in need of some gudiance. I am having a simalar problem locating the lever that connects to the trans. the cable, mounting bracket and pin set is different, so i hopefully purcharsed the correct items and now the selector lever is different, where can i find one for a TH350.
All from The Parts Place Inc. Since I didn't know what year your car was I picked a 70 Cutlass. All listed under console parts. The selector lever is no longer offered but it is listed under 70's F Bodies, Camaro and Firebird, like 507Olds said. You may run into the same problem I had and need to modify the lever. Sorry there is no picture of the selector lever shown.

69'442 that is the selector bracket I'm talking about. If yours is the one pictured then your slot should be long enough. That is much longer than mine was. If you're still having problems also look into the bracket that bolts to the pan rail. It may be able to slide forward and aft.
I don't have any pics to show.

You make the slot longer toward the front of the car.
My point is the bracket you are showing can not be made longer, there is no room. So is the one you are actually using have the same size hole?

If you can't elongate that slot then the bracket bolted to the pan rail needs to come backward so it goes into 1st gear when the selector is in that position. At least that's my memory of it. If I'm not mistaken the bracket on the pan rail has elongated holes for adjustment?
This thread is two years old. You can't expect an senile old bastard to remember this stuff

I am having a similar problem, I am going from column to floor shifter and I brought the silver bracket but i can't seem to figure out how to connect it the shifter cable. When i look in the Assembly manual the brackets dont look the same and the silver bracket doesn't have a place to connect the shifter cable. Does anyone know what i am doing wrong?

If you would describe the part and it's location that you'd like to see a picture of I may be able to get it for you. John
