Hughes GM25HD converter size

I’ve recently purchased a Hughes GM25HD converter and ran into issues with converter size. I’ve researched this converter in the forums and found that Hughes is now sending out 9” converters as standard for this model.

I called Hughes and they recommended the 12” GM25HD for my application. They said that even though they send out 9” GM25HD converters as standard, they still do have the 12” GM25HD converter….it just needs to be special ordered or indicated as a GM25HD-12.

JEGS was having a good deal on the GM25HD-400BP Hughes converter(which their website shows as a 12” converter), so I talked to a JEGS representative on the phone to order one. I told the rep that Hughes indicated that a 9” converter would be sent out unless it was specifically indicated to be a 12” converter. The JEGS rep promised that I would be receiving a 12” converter because that’s what their part description indicated. Lo and behold I received this converter………

9” Hughes GM25HD

After receiving this, I called JEGS back and informed them that I had received a 9” converter instead of a 12” converter. They sent me a return shipping label and did a special order from Hughes to get me the 12” converter. After a trip to FedEx to return the 9” converter and waiting another week, I received the following converter….

Hughes GM25HD 12” converter

So I just wanted anyone curious about this to know that you can still get a 12” converter…..but you just have to jump through some additional hoops.

Thanks for the info. I am wondering if they gave you any more information as to why the 12" version was better for your application than the 9" version.

The individual I spoke with at Hughes said that with my car, cam, gear, engine(455)…. the 9” GM25HD converter would move the stall speed to 3000rpm plus. I wasn’t expecting that since the 9” converter is also what I assumed to be a 2500 rpm converter.

So I guess the best thing for a person to do is call and talk to them before ordering a converter.

Gotta wonder what setup that 9" converter is rated for in order to stall at 2500 RPM.
