stock turbo 400

How much horsepower will a stock turbo 400 take? I have been considering rebuilding my 76 455 to the tune of about 450 hp and wonder if going through the th400 is also in order. As of now it works great with only about 80000 miles on it .Has had regular maintenance since day one

If you do a mild build on your 455 there's no need to upgrade your TH400.

Concur. The TH400 is as close to a bulletproof trans as was ever built.

The current “record” for a transmission I have built with stock parts is 1380rwhp. That’s a twin turbo 6.0 LS in a fairly heavy car.

Keep in mind, that with all factory parts minus the valve body. Stock shafts, stock gearsets, stock drums, nothing more than a transbrake.

It’s amazing the power these transmissions can take. If you had told the HydraMatic engineers that designed these transmissions they could take 1500hp with ease, they would probably laugh.

To answer your question, any 400 will reliably handle 400-500 with any factory parts. Much more than that, you need to a little more selective of what factory parts go in, and some cheap (free) hydraulic upgrades are needed as well.

Tell us a little more about what you are wanting to do, we can help with some decisions.
