Super range mode

Can anyone explain how the super range mode "S" gear on auto trans on 72 olds 442 works. I know it gives better acceleration but want a better understanding on how.

The transmission has three speeds and S prevents shifting to third (high) gear, keeping it in first and second. This keeps the engine RPM higher than it would be in third, so better throttle response since there’s no 3 to 2 downshift when accelerating.

Think of it this way: "Super" = 'S' = Second.

The valve body is also set up to activate the intermediate band to provide engine braking.
