Bowtie Overdrives 200-4R
Greetings,
I currently have a 1972 Cutlass Supreme with a 350 Rocket that has been beefed up slightly and pushing just over 360 hp. I just installed a 10 Bolt posi with 3.42 gears and I'm now looking for an OD transmission. I've been looking at Bowtie Overdrives 200-4R level two and would like any feedback that can be provided on the vendor, transmission selection, etc. Thank you!

Bowtie's quality can be hit or miss, but they are cheaper. I installed one in a buddy's Chevelle, it works OK. Calibration isn't quite right, but runs fine. Some of their add-on parts were junk (speedo adapter, lockup system).
I had Extreme Automatics build one for my Cutlass. Had to send the governor back for adjustment but it runs great. Quite a bit more expensive.
There's a few other small shops that still do 200-4rs, but they're getting scarce. CK Automatics is the parts supplier for a bunch of the common upgrade parts and they still build them to order.
A good converter and lockup scheme is a big part of the equation. PATC has some good options. I had a small shop build mine - R&R Racing Torque Converters - and its a great match and at a good price. I wanted Lenny @ UCC to build one - the th350 converter he built was awesome - but his price was more than 2x R&Rs. Lenny doesn't like building lockup converters.....
Note that any built 200-4r will "bang" going from 3rd to 2nd. It's a feature to keep parts from getting destroyed. If you like quiet comfy shifts then this is not the trans for you. The shifts have to get moderate to hard or else the trans eats itself.

I have a similar Hp 350 setup and I used Extreame Automatics. I could not be happier. Car has about 15k miles on it now with no issues. I followed his directions on TV cable adjustment and pressure setting when I installed it. Also followed his recommendation on the deep sump pan. Shifted correctly right from the git go and I have not touched it since.
