New guy with M21 shifter question

As new guy on the block, hello to everyone. New to forum and new to 442 ownership.
I recently purchased a 1965 442 with M21 4 speed. The shifter is worn out and needs rebuilding. Hopeing someone has been down this road before and has recommendations.
Thanks

That 65 shifter is a Muncie unit and is not a good shifter to begin with. All of the 64/65 guys I know swap it out for a 66 up Hurst Competition Plus OEM unit. You can still use your 65 handle with the Hurst unit by using an adapter that's available. I have some of the 66 up Hurst shifters complete with everything needed to install if you decide to upgrade to a much better shifter. Contact me @ pchopesq@aol.com

I tried a Competition Plus but it wouldn't fit. Hit the transmission mount. Same Hurst number for 65 and 66. That's the one everyone says fits. I'm officially puzzled.

That's odd. I know of several 64/65 cars with the later OEM Hurst shifter. Do you have a picture of the Hurst shifter and mounting plate>? I talked a buddy today and he has a 65 and his has the Hurst shifter and he thought it came in the car from the factory. Mounting plates make a lot of difference & if you have the wrong one it can be the issue.

I have a 65 442 and did the swap to a Hurst shifter and didn’t have any problems hitting the mount, the adapter will make the handle higher than the stock Muncie shifter

Probably hit the wrong holes in the plate.

Actually I think I figured it out. Didn’t see mounting bracket with the other items in the installation kit and with no instructions with it at all, I was trying to mount shifter to transmission, not bracket. Obviously won’t fit. Didn’t see a bracket so don’t know if it wasn’t in the kit or got shoved under something. I’ll get to work on the car again tomorrow and will look for a bracket.
Thanks to all who helped.
