How to install new shifter slide into 1970-72 std floor shifter

My new shift slide won't install over the t-handle as the square hole is does not allow enough clearance to pass over the t-handle. What is the trick to install?
Thanks

Remove the "T" There is a small roll pin at the bottom of the "T". You can use a very small nail to remove the pin.

I am SO glad to find your post! So simple but very easy to overlook!
