Dual Gate shifter, how does it work?

Just got my 71 SX back from the body shop and starting to toy with it.

It has the Dual Gate Hurst shifter but it doesn't seem to work or more likely I don't know how it works.

I can't seem to move it to the right thru the gate?

HELP

Did you push the metal shield over to access the 1-2-3? ? It should move over in neutral to the other side with very little pressure.

The shield or the arm on the shifter? its just a little spring that holds it to the left side your pinky should be able to move it over to the right. if not I'd suspect something is jammed in the shifter (pen old receipts junk...) somewhere. Or someone put a dual gate plate on a regular shifter but I don't even think that would work.

Yes it does. They rebuilt the tranny and it is really stiff even pulling it down out of park to drive. I suppose they didn't get it in right but they are out if vegas and the car is in sd now.

If its hard to move into any gear it might be the steering column binding or the parking lock. You should be able to look down into the shifter while it's in park to see if somethings stuck down there. Really in a perfect world this is all something the shop should of fixed replaced or made you aware of. did they put in a new shifter cable to?

distach the backdrive [trans up to steering column] underneath and see if it works better. If so, it's the steering column or backdrive.

If not, look at the shifter and/or the CABLE and its connections.
