Hello, I'm new o the site, I have 1969 442 that I am doing a manual conversion on, I have recently picked up a 4 speed Muncie M21, and have a manual console I am planning to have placed in the car with this conversion. But Ive been having issues IDing the mounting plate for the OEM 442 Hurst shiftier. And since there are so many types and different years I was wondering if anybody here might have a 442 with standard set up, and if they could share some pictures of what the plate is supposed to be. Also the levers would be a real help as well to see. With so many different types between car's and years I don't want to end up purchasing something that will not work with my shiftier and will end up with my knuckles smacking the dash or the shiftier hitting the console.

 

Are you aware about the issues with fitting a manual trans where an auto was with an Oldsmobile engine?

 

The engine's getting pulled, and it's not original to the car, I am having a 455 built for this car. Not really sure about any major issues that there would be. Like I said, right now my big issue is not knowing a thing about which mounting plate to run with, and which linkage levers to go with.

 

You need to make sure that the crank is set up for the pilot bearing. Engines that got automatics didn't have the crankshaft provisioned for it and you will either need to modify the crank, get a crank that is set up for it, or modify the input shaft of the trans and get a special beairng for the conversion.

 

Luckily like I said the 455 is being rebuilt, so it's not too big of a problem at this stage. But thanks for mentioning it, I had heard something about this once before. I'll mention it too my engine shop.

 

The crankshaft not being machined for the pilot bearing is one issue that was mentioned, but the larger issue is the fact that some 455's did not have the provision for ball stud on the side of the block for the equalizer bar.
