1970-72 Dual gate shifter refresh

Ive been a bit bored and itching to restore or fix something lately so I looked up in my garage one day and saw this dual gate shifter on a shelf. I kind of knew what had to be done and visualized what I needed to do to it and I had all the parts and tools to do so why not? This will be for another project I have down the road that I will share with you guys when the time comes.

A little dated but complete

Started disassembly

Was thinking of removing shifter to have it rechromed but I think it will clean up good enough

After some cleaning and polishing

Shifter linkage rubbed a groove on frame body

Sandblasted area in prep for weld bead

Filled groove with weld

Re formed to original shape

I started with a rusty but mostly complete unit. This is where I'm at today after a couple weeks in my spare time.

more work on the dual gate

Bead blasted some parts

I didnt bead blast the top plate because I wanted to try to preserve the color. Mostly everything is bare steel except for top plate and a few pcs.

I decided to chemically remove rust from top plate on shifter body in order to save the color.

Wire wheel after blasting brings out the shine.

Original light socket

Bead blasted

Etch primed

Gloss white paint

Slowly cleaning each pc

Removing rust from small pcs that I want to preserve finish color on (black oxide)

Rust chemically removed from top plate

Dipped top plate in black oxide solution

Preparing for re-assembly

I wire wheeled and brushed what I could on the main body and went over with SEM satin clear

clear coat for protection

Satin clear on main body

I used matte finish clear for top plate

All back together

I got the shifter back together today, now I'll just put it back on the shelf and wait for the next project to begin.
