My 78' Delta 88 has the 403cid engine w/the TH350 tranny. The car just keeps eatting through the TH350 's It has now had 4 total(2 before I owned it). I bought it w/a bad transmission. I rebuilt the first tranny I put in it w/new torque converter and the car even had the 2nd and sometimes 3rd gear scratch. A year or so later rattling came from underneath the car. The bearings in the torque converter where no longer in tact, which eventually ruined the tranny. I just threw in a junkyard tranny & torque converter as well as radiator. There was a theory I had w/the radiator. It wasn't cooling the tranny therfore overheating tranny fluid causing the bearings to go inside torque. Nope has happened all over again w/junkyrd tranny & torque. Now the new theory is maybe it's a unbalanced or warped flywheel or maybe the TH350 is not strong enough therfore maybe swapping it out for a TH400, but what needs to be done to do this? I know The tailshaft needs to be shortened and the detent switch w/a TH400 is on the Gas Pedal. But What else? Any ideas or experiences please list a response or an email. Thanks!

Sounds like the flywheel might be the culprit, but it's more probable that the 403 is putting out too much power for the torque converter (2nd and 3rd gear scratch? WOW!).

Racers have used TH-350s for years behind BBO engines, but they certainly weren't stock.

Try realoldspower.com for further advise. Lotsa racer types there that could give you ideas and solutions.

Good luck!
