what overdrive automatic to run

I'm planning on putting a mostly stock 455 in my 68 cutlass and was going with a th400. I started thinking about a 4 sp. auto. What is the best 4 sp automatic to put in behind a bigblock? (strength, availablility, easy swap, etc.) Thanks for any info!

Availability is probably a 700r4 although their strength is not the greatest unless beefed up considerably.

I'd recommend Gear Vendors overdrive unit. Strength, availability, easy swap all in one. You also get to keep your TH400. http://www.gearvendors.com/index.html

The 4L80E is becoming more available, and the price is coming down on used pieces.
Basically a 400 w/OD, and electronics should also be getting cheaper, as more companies are getting involved.

Do these 2 units come in the BOP bellhousing? What cars would they have been in from the factory, if you wanted a used one? What kind of dollars for each?

The 200 4R is what most of the guys swap to right now. There are BOP patterns, and the multi-pattern,which has both Chevy & BOP. The 480LE would be nice,if there are enough aftermarket pieces available to make it work.If not, there will be shortly.

Both transmissions [700 + 4L80] need the adapter plate, which is no big deal.
Never heard of a trans problem from the adapter messing up!

Any time you run an adapter, you need to have the corresponding spacers for the converter to the flexplate,so your converter is not pulled-out farther. They should come with the adapter kit.
