what do you guys think?

1985 Delta 88
So I'm driving to go get transmission fluid, I stop at a red light, then the light says go but I stay put -_-.. the car rolls JUST enough so I can get out of the street (lucky much?). I believe my transmission is gone. BUT out of curiosity I add some transmission fluid. I push the gas to the floor and the car moves foward. So now I'm confused. I know that if your transmission is shot, the car doesn't move. And I know my transmission has a leak because when I add transmission fluid, the next day it's on the ground.. What do you guys think is wrong? And do you think I'm going to need to get the transmission rebuilt?

The least you will need is to stop the leaks. If it just ran out of fluid and you didn't burn the transmission up before it quit there is a little hope. What does the fluid smell like? Has this happened before?

If you are going to have a shop look at your leaks have them give you a recommendation if it is smoked or not. If you are going to work on it your self pull the pan and see how much metallic junk you have at the bottom of the pan.Other wise it is just a crap shoot guessing...Tedd

Was the transmission low prior to your adding fluid?

This has happened to me before a couple times, both GM and other products. Trans leaks, starts to slip/becomes inop, new fluid being added gets things going. It's been my experience that this is the beginning of the end. You may be able to get a few more weeks(months?) out of it but in my opinion you are now on borrowed time. Don't change the fluid now, just keep adding when it's low. Start thinking about a rebuild or a replacement.

if the trans is very low on fluid it wont go forward...run your car at idle for 5 mins or so and shift the car a few times thru the gears untill the fluid gets warm then check the dipstick, hopefully you wont see any fluid on the stick and its down a few quarts and that would be your best scenario. if your fluid level is near full you can check to see if the hose to the vacuum modulator is connected and not leaking

I'd be willing to bet if you filled to the proper level you'll be good to go for a while if its not making any strange noises. Work on fixing the leaks.

Pour some JB Weld down there. That stuff will fix anything!
