Transmission Leak Getting Worse

When I bought my car 3 years the seal where the linkage mounts on the driver side was seeping, a few drops here and there. I think in 3 years I may have added 2-3 quarts of transmission fluid. Well I haven't driven the car much lately, and I took it out of the garage today and noticed quite a few drops on the ground.

I got underneath it today and not only is it leaking from the linkage past, but from what I think is the speedometer cable. It was down about a pint, so I added a pint of "Bars Leak Transmission Stop Leak", mainly because it's all I had, and wanted to level to be full.

If it doesn't stop the leaks, is this complicated? I was told the linkage seal requires a special tool, otherwise damage to the housing can occur. Any had these two seals replaced? How much am I looking at?

I haven't done anything besides oil changes to the car since I've had it, it needs a tune up bad, a carb adjustment, a bunch of other things. Debating if it's just time to call it a day on the car and go buy a Harley.

bumb. The black cable running to the tail end of the transmission, is this a speedometer cable? Is this a simple seal fix that I could do? I don't have the books for the car, anyone have a break-out drawing of it?

Or is there a PDF of the shop manuals for these cars anywhere? I know my Genesis Coupe forums posted one, maybe we have them here and I just couldn't find them?

There are some online, yes, but what year/model Olds do you have?

A factory service manual for your car is available online at

http://wildaboutcarsonline.com/index.html

You have to register to get access, but it doesn't cost anything.

Awesome thanks. It seems section 4 and 5 for my car are missing or not there, but there is still some useful information. Thank you.

Really? I see five sections to the '72 Chassis service manual, with section 3 dealing with transmissions. It looks to me that the entire manual is there.

Yep, thats the speedo cable - common leak point.
I think there are two different seals in that attachment area - one for the cable itself and one for the 'adapter'.

The shift shaft seal can be replaced only after the pan is dropped and the shifter linkage removed.

For alll the seals, I think the fluid needs to be drained to the pan sealing area level.

I need to do all of mine but the car needs to be off the ground a bit. I got all the seals from rockauto for a whopping 6 bucks.

Yep - call it the day...

But - keep the car AND get a Harley!!
The two are fun in their own special ways.

Looks like it's going to a transmission shop. I know if I remove the linkage, I'll never get it back right and I'll be stuck in first gear, or something stupid like that.
