Transmission interchange

I have an 87 Olds Cutlass Supreme with the 305 'Y' motor and a REAL bad leak from the front seal on the trans. If I understand the trans ID plate, it has the 200c trans ("KBB"). I've heard the 200c is generally a weak trans, and the trans repair shops seem to think they have to overhaul the whole trans instead of just replacing the seal, and that equals $$$. Is there any problems or benefits from putting in a 200R4 or 700 series in lieu of just having the 200c overhauled? I'm not rodd'n it, I believe in stock/pristeen where reasonably possible and that's what I have, but don't want to deal with trans problems in the future, either.

Harrold,

I am by no means knowledgeable on the newer cars and in general am not one of those mechanics that have good info for every problem, but I just want to let you know you are welcome to our site and I am sure someone will have a good answer for you. It seems they are telling you it would be better to overhaul the tranny than to just try and fix the leak. Maybe they want to sell their trade but they might be rigth in that the man-hours to repair the tranny would be almost as much as the man-hours to overhaul it. If the tranny has to be removed from the car either way. Just my 2 cents....

Often an honest 2 cents is much more valuable than a thousand samples of pure 'hot air'! Thanks.

TH-350 is the same length and will bolt right up. No driveshaft, linkage or flexplate canges needed.

And welcome to classicoldsmobile.com!
