transmission fluid for 1950 hydramatic

There isn't much to choose from, is there? All they have today for old GM cars is Dex/Merc, and it's sold by several different companies. Go to any auto parts store, and that's all you see. It's designed for use by 2005 model year and older GM cars. It's what I have in my '67 and '78 Oldsmobiles. The latest fluid is Dexron VI, but that's specifically for 2006 and newer cars.
There's also this, a synthetic, that apparently works with everything. I've never tried this stuff.

Dex/Merc is about your only option. The original spec was Type A suffix A which has gone the way of the dinosaur and dodo. The original AMT fluid blends contained whale oil which is why it stunk so bad when it burnt, but since the whale savers gained traction that is verboten. Though I've heard newer Honda fluid contains it... hmm, guess the Japanese whaling industry never went away.
Was in an antique mall a few days back and saw an unopened 1950s yellow label GM can of HydraMatic fluid. $65 and it was yours. I have a 40s style blue label Delco can of HMT fluid that I paid 8 bucks for it in a little out of the way antique shop a few years back.
