Tranny backing a 455

Tranny backing a 455

Found that my 442 has a 455 someone dropped in after-the-fact. What 4-speed auto would be compatible with an Olds 455? TH400?

Plus, does anyone here have an aftermarket Hurst shifter? What would you recommend for a light-to-light guy wishing he had a manual tranny?

The only 4 speed automatic that bolts to an Olds motor is the 200-4R. This trans can be built to survive behind a big block, but you're talking about a custom build. The 4L80E is a TH400 with an extra overdrive gear, so strengthwise it will survive, but you'll need an adapter plate and a standalone electronic controller since the trans is computer controlled.

How do I identify which tranny is backing a motor? Where would the ID plate be?

Thanks for the website! I put it to good use. I should have a 375/400/475 or 3L80 tranny behind the 455.

13 bolts and the basic shape of the pan.

So I shouldn't need a new tranny right?

The guy's kid spun the number 6 bearing before they rebuilt it. Just wondering what could have caused it.

Most likely of the above listed, you have a th400. If it's a stock trans, that would have been what came behind a 455 in a 442 til sometime in the 70's.
