torqe converter

hi all, I have a 65 starfire with a rebuilt tranny, it is a switch pitch. and when I shift in to gear , it seems to go in rough , like it wants to jump ahead, even if I tern idle down. am I right in thinking that the converter is what makes the smooth transfer of power to the rear,im not sure , can any one weigh in on this problem ?all input would be appreciated , thanks will.

I could be wrong, but I think its job is to allow the engine to freewheel to a certain RPM before the transmission will begin to make the car roll. If this is incorrect, someone please jump in.

Have you verified the correct operation of the switch pitch?
