ST300 Dipstick Measurement

Hi Guys,

I have a 1967 Cutlass Supreme with a 330 engine and a 2 speed transmission which I believe is a Jetaway. I have reason to believe the previous owner added a tranny dipstick that is not the original length. I have to remove nearly a gallon of fluid to get an accurate reading on the dipstick. It's much longer then the dipstick tube which I believe is the right tube. I'm looking for anyone with this same set up that is willing to measure their tranny dipstick from the bottom tip of the dipstick to where it enters the handle (do not include the handle in the measurement). Any help appreciated.

Hopefully you are measuring your tranny fluid with the engine running and the fluid warm!

ST300 Dipstick Measurement

The car is at temp, in park, running on level surface. The transmission fluid level reads very high on the dipstick. I have to remove around 3 quarts of fluid to get the level to read accurate on the dipstick, and when I remove that much fluid the car won't go into gear so I'm confident the fluid level is accurate and the dipstick is too long. If I could get the stock length of the dipstick to gauge mine against it would really help. Thanks

It is. The Jetaway/ST300 was the only two-speed trans ever installed by Oldsmobile.

I've got a 1967 Cutlass with the 2 speed and the transmission dip stick is 20 1/4" from tip to base of handle. Also the one I have has a part number stamped into it, 1361594 John

To the OP: If you need a ST300 dipstick, let me know, I can hook you up w/ my old one.

You need the length of the tube also. The length of the stick doesn't do any good with the wrong tube.

I took some measurements from my dipstick and tube from my '68 Jetaway (ST-300). With the stick seated in the tube:

Stick tip to bulge on tube (where it seats on the trans housing) = 4-1/8"

With the stick out of the tube:

Stick tip to ADD mark = 1-3/8"
Stick tip to FULL mark = 2"
Stick tip to base of cap (where it seats at the top of the tube) = 24-3/8"

Doing the math:

The ADD mark is 2-3/4" below the trans housing seat (*)
The FULL mark is 2-1/8" below the trans housing seat (*)
The tube length is 20-1/4" from top to bulge where it seats on the trans housing (the bottom of the tube extends below the fluid line and hides the ADD & FULL marks when the stick is seated in the tube)

(*) This is at whatever angle the tube/stick enters the housing, not vertically from the tube opening.

Hope this helps.

ST300 Dipstick Measurement

2blu442, That's what I needed. I believe you confirmed my initial thought. My dipstick measures 25 inches from tip to base of handle. Your's is 20.25 inches. That gives mine 4.75 inches to long and that's the same amount of extra fluid on my dipstick when reading it hot in park. Thank you for taking the time to do that for me. Now to find the correct stick!

JohnnyBs68S, is your's 20.25 from tip to the base of where it enters the tube?

My stick is 24-3/8" from the tip to the "inside" of the little cap near the handle (the point where it would seat against the top of the tube when fully inserted in the tube). From 2blu442's 2nd photo, my stick appears to be 3-1/2" longer than his (20-7/8" vs. 24-3/8"). It appears that they used a longer tube & stick in '68 than in '67? It sounds like either your tube is too short or your stick is too long.

If you can pull your tube out, you should be able to "re-calibrate" your stick (cutoff extra length and make new ADD/FULL marks) based on the measurements I provided. The only critical measurements is how far below the trans housing hole (bulge on the tube) the ADD/FULL marks end up being with the stick fully inserted in the tube.

John,
Thanks again for the measurements you posted. Would you be willing to take one more measurement so I can confirm mine is right now. I need the length from the bottom tip of the dipstick to the full line. If you're willing, thanks in advance.

I work in Forestry and we're having bad forest fires right now. Between work and family obligations I don't have time to play with the car stuff. So if none of the other guys come up with what you need send me a reminder in a week. If I don't reply to that wait a week and try again. Fall rains should be coming soon... we hope!

Its been over 5 years (and a few beers) since I posted that. I'll have to look to see if I still have it.
