Need a dipstick measurement.

I have the oem tube and stick lengths in the manuals, but it doesn't apply in this case.

I have an aftermarket chrome tube here with a stick from a chrysler minivan on this motor.

Sooooo, I need to know what the length from the block flange to the full mark on the stick is so I may trim this tube to the proper length.

J, I'm thinking the 350 and 455 used different tubes/indicators. Which one are you working on?

It's a 77' 350, but as far as I can discern, an olds pan is an olds pan. One has a baffle, one doesn't. They theoretically should all have the same distance from the flange to the full mark. Perhaps a tad different to subtract the volume of the BBO baffle, but i imagine that is negligible.

Toronado measurements do not apply in this case of course.

Sorry, I was going the other direction in my mind. From the block flange to the top of the tube where the dip stick goes in. Yeah, one needs an engine on a stand with the pan off to get the measurement you need. John

Right. I'm hoping someone has a matched combo hanging up on the pegboard in the garage somewhere.

If someone can provide a known good factory measurement we could sticky this so others may use the measurement to double check their chinesium aftermarket pieces.

Its past my bedtime so my brain is slowing down.... old age I guess. Somewhere in my clutter I may have a tube/indicator together and would be able to get that measurement apart from the engine. If nobody comes up with what you need by Saturday send me a PM or email to remind me and I'll see if I can lay my hands on one.

Does any of the info in this thread help?

https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...-question.html

If no one else has the info, I have an early 400 tube/indicator in the garage that I can measure when I get home.

This is the important measurement. Years and stock lengths are semi- irrelevant to me. Nobody knows what all these aftermarket tubes will measure when we order them online.

Our best bet is to find one that is too long, and trim it to our specs.

I texted you J but I got 8 in. (to the end tip) With my mr gasket dip stick I got from rocket racing. I run a bbo oil pan and when it has 6 qts after running the engine I'm dead nuts at full.

If you would be so kind, sir. From the tube flange, to the full mark on the stick.

Two things missing in that pic

a number- I cannot see any numbers on that caliper

a clue what it measuring to and from
the top end we can guess is the seat that abuts the block
The bottom end might be FULL or ADD or ???

Write on the cardboard when taking pix, and/or run the pic past Pain(t) and add some noteage. That would be ever so helpful for readers.

I mentioned the goal in my previous posts.

I need the measurement from the flat flange above the flares, to the Full mark.

The caliper picture was just for reference and to emphasize that the upper tube length doesn't pertain to my goal.

Thanks a bunch for all of your measurements, fellas.

Coppercutlass already pm'd me and let me know that the mister gasket aftermarket pair measures 5.75" from the flange to the full mark on the stick.

I am curious how close the aftermarket items are to the real deal.

With all of the different lengths of everything over the years, dipstick assemblies are not as simple as just tossing any old pair together.

I found the dipstick assemblies for the '67 400, the '72 455, and the '70 350:

400 and 455 both measured 6.5" from the upper ring to the FULL mark.

Interesting that the '72 455 measured 3/4" from FULL to ADD and the '67 400 measured 7/8" from FULL to ADD.

The 350 measured 5.75" from the upper ring to the FULL mark, and 7/8" from FULL to ADD.

I measured the dipstick boss cast into the engine block on both a small block and a big block, and there isn't a height difference in the castings.

I can only assume at this point, that the reason for less oil in the big block is due to the bigger counterweights on the crankshaft, and so they're not slapping the oil pool when they spin.

Evidence shows that the big blocks have less oil available to them and they have much bigger bearing journals. All the more reason to run a deep 7 quart pan instead of a stock pan. They're missing 3/4 of an inch of pan volume from the factory.

I just measured a stick set from a 403, and it also came to 5.75". The field data on the small blocks and big blocks is unanimous so far.

When I went through this I just installed the tube and did an oil change and read where the full mark landed on the dipstick. Mine was about an 1/8' off but I couldn't seat the tube any farther.

I'll third the 5.75" flange to full mark 72 350 sbo, I have a pic somewhere of the spectre replacement stick next to the original. Iirc the spectre full mark was ~3/8" lower than the stock stick....I'll have to find the pic
