Hey All, here is what I'm up agains't. My 56 88 Holiday has 65 Motor and transmission in it. The original transmission would spin the speedo cable. Somewhere in the 60's Olds used the left front wheel to run the cable. Now I'm using a heads up display for my speedo. The 65 trans was never machined out for the cable hookup. I want the original speedo to work. The only thing I know to get a different tranny. Anyone else out there have a better idea? Thanks for any help, Dennis
Hey Joe Padavano, just wanted to say thanks for your help. I took your advice and bought a speed box. I installed it yesterday and drove my 56 Olds today, it works just great. I am so glad to have the factory speedo working. Thanks again, Dennis

The speedbox looks like a nice solution to a variety of issues. So, this connects with a cable directly to the speedometer, no longer connected to the trans? Between trans changes, rear end, tires, I feel I could play around for a long time and still not have an accurate speedometer. I currently use the Waze app on my phone, but this would be nice.
it is so nice to get the gps off of the dash and this speedbox works great. Wasn't cheap but cheaper then replacing the transmission. I seen one of these speedxoxes several years ago but was well over $700. I love the fact that it's right on the on the money and tire size makes no difference. It was easy hook up on an old car.
Good question, Chris. I don't know what the output torque of that box is, or if the torque requirement to drive the cruise transducer is appreciably greater than the torque to drive the speedo head. I suspect that it is, unfortunately. You may also want to check the cruise transducer for bearing wear and dry lubricant that can cause drag and contribute to flutter.

Thanks for responding. Not to hijack the thread, but I think the cruise control governor weights will require much more torque to spin them as compared to the speedo head.
As part of that project, I pulled the governor shaft & speedo head shaft out of the unit, polished the old grease off, polished the bearings, and regreased them all before reassembly. The bronze bearings could still be worn, but the gears are spinning freely like a child’s toy top.
I think my problem is in the lower cable that connects the unit to the front wheel, but I can’t seem to get the well used cables routed in a way that stops the flutter. I’ve cleaned the spiral housings with carb and brakleen, then relubed them. I polished the cables with #0000 steel wool and lubed them too. The cables don’t seem kinked, but after installation they do have some tight bends. I’m just hoping I can find routing that let’s the cable spin freely.
It’s really only a problem below 25 mph, but I spend a lot of my drive time in suburban traffic in that speed range.
The frustrating part is I got my 98 cruise unit to work perfectly - no flutter at all. Now that’s feeling like luck, not knowledge.
Originally these cables were routed in front of the single master cylinder, which I’m sure you know is less deep into the front of the car than the dual masters both cars now have. Which pushes me in the direction of a custom cable, or maybe I’ll get lucky swapping in a slightly shorter Caddy cable or my 1 good spare.
Suggestions most welcome. I’m running out of ideas and the flutter is a little crazy making.
