shift to early

hello olds-guys,
is long ago i was here in the forum.

i tune last 2 years my 403cui from my 1978 olds delta88 coupe.
72-350 heads, mondello crane, edelbrock manifold+carburetor and a torque converter 2200-2400 stall speed.

now i have the problem - when i drive or i take the kick down the engine gives more speed but than shift the transmition to early.

what or where i can adjust the shift-time on my transmission.

cool when you can help me.

best regards from germany
michael

Michael,

The transmission modulator valve can sometimes be adjusted, if not you might be able to purchase an adjustable valve. This will allow a small adjustment in shift points.

You might have to have the transmisson governor looked at or replaced also. This device is the main controller of shift points.

Good Luck.

Yep, the modulator will change shift points 2-4 mph, if you need more of a change the govenor will need to be replaced or modified.

Look for a vacuum leak in the line from the modulator to were it gets its source sometimes this causes the problem

hell...o and thanks for your answers.
i dont think is a vacum leak problem. the car is good shift but after the tuning bring the engine more power in the middle and high rpm and it is also more as 1 to 3 miles/hour.
i must look what the governor is - and check that with my friend (mechanics).

best regards from germany

The governor is behind a round cover on the pass side of the case. If it shift sooner than u want at wot you will need to make some changes to the weights and springs. B&M sells a kit to change shift points along with instructions.
