I am new to the oldsmobiles and want some info on my trans, the engine is a 396 ci in a 1962 rocket 88, can anyone tell me what this trans is, and if there is anyway to help it change better without loosing drive for a second when I put my foot down, I have adjusted the TV cable and ir has new oil which did make it better, and if anyone knows where I can buy a good trans filter that would be awsome help many thanks,
Welcome. Your engine is a 394 first generation Oldsmobile and has nothing in common with the Chevy 396. That trans is the Rotohydramatic 10, popularly known as the Slim Jim. It has a number of idiosyncrasies including that poor shift quality. Trans filters and parts are available from Fatsco.
Be very careful about adjusting the TV rod. Proper operation depends on accurate adjustment'
The proper adjustment procedure is outlined in the 1961 Oldsmobile Service Manual. ( get the 62 supplement too )
Jaswest makes the special adjustment gauge.
These transmissions shift much differently than Turbo Hydramatics.
First gear is very low, to get the heavy car moving quickly.
Then there is a long " jump " to second gear with a drastic ratio change.
Then a short " hop " to third.
