Muncie-M21 1967-68?
I have this muncie M-21 with I belive a 67 cast and stamp but would it be for 68? maybe some gurus can post some info.
7 L 113736 (on top of case and stamped on another area)
one ring inputshaft - M-21
P7R20 stamp code - October 20,1967
Main case #3885010
Tailshaft #3857584
Side Cover #3884685
My question is with the October stamp date would it be for 1968? or a late 67 .
My research says "L" is Oldsmoblie with M-21 would be 442 cutlass with 411 gears or perhaps a W-30 Hurst olds with 4:33 gears VIN ending in 113736....
This Trans came in a 65SS 4speed nova a buddy bought years ago now in CA , He now has correct Muncie for his car this one removed and just sitting for ten years.
there is a Hurst shifter attached to it Flat stock handle and the shifter says Hurst. Thanks for any input I want as much correct information before I advertise it in classifieds.
Thanks in advance Joe

That is not an Olds trans.
You are correct that is an October '67 trans, and that would be for the '68 model year. That also means it has the VIN derivative stamped on it which is what you see "7 L 113736", I believe. If it were an Olds trans it would have "38 M 113736" or another letter. The "3" is for Olds Div., the "8" is for 1968 model year, the letter M would be Lansing plant or whatever plant code (must be M,Z,G, or E), and the last 6 numbers are the last 6 numbers of the original VIN.

The trans was built Oct. 20th 1966 for use in early 1967 model year cars...
3885010 main case was used 1966-67 model years only...
"L" is Van Nuys, Ca. assembly plant... In 1967 they built F-bodys there...
Hope this helps... Crash

Joe, You have to remember Muncie 4-speeds are dated for the model year, not the callender year...
What model year car were on the assembly line in Oct. 1966???
1967 model cars right, that why the "P" number is P7R20...
P=====Muncie
7=====1967 model year
R=====October
20====20th day
So the only Oct. in the 1967 model year is, Oct 1966...
Hope this helps... Crash

And as further evidence, a '67 model year trans would not have a VIN derivative stamp,as that started with '68 model year.
So this transmission is date coded for Oct 1967 for a 1968 model.

VIN derivative stamps on aluminum 4-speeds in Chevys started in 1963...
In the NCRS 1953-72 spec guide the VIN for the last car produced of every month is recorded, with this information you can track early model year cars, and see that Muncies built and dated P7R20 indeed were built Oct of 1966 for use in a 1967 model year car...
The "L" in the VIN stands for Van Nuys Ca. where Camaros are built...
The "7" in front of the "L" is the model year...
The 3885010 main case was used 1966-67 only...
I know Olds didn't use VIN's on drive trains until 1968, but this trans is NOT from an Olds...
I hope this clears up any questions you have...
If not, I have over 100 Muncie cores in stock, and more than 200 main cases to choose from to prove my point...

Thanks for the explanation Crash, I'll look into it further. You'd think that the sites that cover Muncie Trans would get it right.

Looking at the numbers I've recorded over the years one this stands out for me. there were alot of mistakes made.
The 66 KC plant only built Chevelles and El Caminos. OK do any of these numbers make sense to anyone?
the 67 Lordstown Ohio plant built full size Chevrolet's. They built more cars on the 26th of April then they did on the 27th?
The 68 KC plant look good except I question if thy really built 33180 cars from Feb 15th to March 25. Take note how the vin number dropped in August.
Now there are not enough numbers here to verify which numbers are right and which are wrong but it gives one a overview of at least what
your up against when trying to decifer such info.
Note the numbers for the 1966 K plant- KANSAS CITY ( Chevelle and El Camino)
